The internet just got a good deal less jolly, it's like there's only one colour of m&m's left in the bag.

This week Yukito Kishiro announced on his blog that he had a dispute with his editors/publisher, that started with having to redraw a few pages for strong language, and escalated in the direction of getting orders to use a mac instead of a pc, and having to explain a lot of things about the manga (really stupid ones, ie: "Why does Ping look younger then M'badi?"), and then apparently having to redraw a lot of pages ... All of these under the flag of "protecting their business".

The result is that Yukito went on a strike.
That's right. Yukito stopped drawing, possibly permanent. A very sad day for manga-fans indeed.

On another side of the internet, sites that keep scanslations up have received take-down notices, and onemanga.com -where I read the latest scanslated manga fresh from Japan- announced it will stop hosting manga. It's not that they don't have the right to do that, it's that there's no alternative. Publishing firms around the world all follow their own policies, and good series stop being published, change format, or are simply impossible to get by (not to mention the slow release speed).
Until now I also bought all the series I read. Let's just say a lot of the motivation has gone.

/. (lezen als 'slashdot') is wel plezant. Vooral nu ik m'n pc niet meer moet aanzetten om het nieuws te lezen - met een ipod touch als digitale krant - volg ik de telegraph, le monde, de NY Times en /. in de mate van het mogelijke bij het ontbijt. De problemen in Frankrijk met hun overzeese gebieden, de britse pensioenkassen die ermee ophouden omdat de britse bank geld aan het bijprinten is, de NY Times die bijna failliet is door de te dure overname van de boston globe : dingen die je in de belgische kranten met moeite terugvindt.

Zo is het ook met slashdot: een hoop technisch en wetenschappelijk nieuws, de interessante berichten worden automatisch gefilterd en je hebt onmiddellijk een heleboel achtergrondinformatie en een ruimere kijk op de zaak. Hier een paar fantastische berichten van afgelopen week:

The Bad Astronomer writes "The legislators in Illinois, always on the lookout for more places to find voters, have passed a resolution declaring Pluto is a planet. I'm not sure what else can be said here, except that — besides overstepping their jurisdiction just a wee bit — they make a couple of scientific howlers in the resolution itself."

En nog eentje (Dawkins! - in dit bericht):

"Notable evolutionary biologist, author, and speaker Richard Dawkins was recently invited to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma as part of the school's celebration of Charles Darwin. En dan zijn we er nog niet (ja, 't wordt een lange post, hehehe). Ook deze week ontdekt: 4chan. Blijkbaar super populair, maar toch ook meer 'marginale' posts om het zo uit te drukken... een beetje hoe het internet begon dus

Het proces dat in Zweden tegen "the pirate bay" loopt, heeft af en toe ook een grappige wending:

Eén van de getuigen op 't proces, die de zaak van de piraten blijkbaar verdedigde, heeft ergens vermeld dat hij geen geld wou, maar dat ze wel bloemen naar zijn vrouw mochten sturen... met véél bloemen als gevolg!
